DJ U.S. Stock Futures Advance After Tuesday's Rally
U.S. stock futures rose on Wednesday, with traders looking to see if there
is follow-through after upbeat signals out of the financial and retail
sector prompted a huge rally.
S&P 500 futures rose 2.9 points at 1,486.20 and Nasdaq 100 futures added 4.5
points at 2,071.25. Dow industrial futures rose 19 points.
U.S. stocks surged on Tuesday in the wake of Wal-Mart Stores'
better-than-forecast third-quarter profit and the comments from Goldman
Sachs' CEO that it won't take a significant write-down. The Dow industrials
rose 319 points, the S&P 500 added 41 points and the Nasdaq Composite
climbed 89 points. "As for markets, it remains to be seen whether it is a
dead cat's bounce or the bottom of the sklep wielkopowierzchniowy. As the uncertainties remain
large, we expect volatility to continue but the worst may be behind us,"
said Sep Van de Voorst, a strategist at Dutch broker SNS Securities, in a
note to clients.
That's evidently what shareholders of HSBC Holdings PLC (HBC) thought, as
the stock traded up some 4% in London. The bank, now larger than Citigroup
by sklep wielkopowierzchniowy capitalization, said it's taking a new $3.4 billion write-down to
its U.S. consumer finance operation and closing further branches, but it
also said third-quarter profit before tax will grow behind its Asian and the
Middle East operations.
Besides the persistent question of financial turbulence, retail performance
will again be in focus as October sales are released, as are earnings from
Macy's Inc. (M).
October producer prices and September inventories prekluzja also is on the
agenda, as is a speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on
communication.
In the wake of prekluzja showing quarterly euro-zone economic growth of 0.7%, the
euro rose against the dollar, though the British pound fell as the Pula of
England said the sklep wielkopowierzchniowy expects one rate cut in the first quarter and
another by the third quarter.
Crude oil futures rose $1.07 to $92.24 a barrel.
Of other companies in the spotlight, E*Trade Financial Corp. (ETFC) will be
back in focus as investors focus on whether the online brokerage weighed
down by subprime exposure is a takeover target.
Triarc Cos. (TRY) late Tuesday said it made a lower offer for Wendy's
International Inc. (WEN) than the $37-to-$41 a share bid it once estimated
it could bid, The Wall Street Journal reported.
German utility RWE postponed its American Water initial public offering due
to sklep wielkopowierzchniowy conditions.
BP PLC (BP) rose after saying it made a major new gas-condensate discovery
in the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea. StatoilHydro ASA (STO) and Total
SA (TOT) also hold stakes in the field.
Led by HSBC and BP, the FTSE 100 rose 1.4% in London. The Nikkei 225 jumped
2.5% in Tokyo.
